Charleston, South Carolina was one of the biggest cultural centers during the late 1600’s. Because of this many colonial musicians and actors made their way to this beautiful land. The “Living Museum” is still one of the biggest attraction in the city and honors the city with its contributions to the arts and humanities.

It is also the birthplace of the first American museum called the Charleston Museum that opened in 1773. The Gibbes Museum of Art houses an incredible collection of colonial landscape and historical portraits. Those who love the arts will take pride in the many sculptors, dancers, painters, musicians, and actors that grace the streets along with photographers, potters, jewelry makers, and basket weavers. There are also many renowned arts organizations that include the Charleston Ballet Theatre and the Charleston Symphony Orchestra.

Though there are many great museums in the city this does not mean that you have to visit them to only get a feel for the history of Charleston. Everywhere you look in the city you will notice the amazing architecture and the different sites that will give you a piece of its history. There are historic tours that will take you to the specific places in the city that have more to their past. The tour will show you the homes, churches, and gardens that are full of the rich heritage of Charleston.

Don’t forget to do some shopping and bring back souvenirs for your family back home. Charleston is full of different shops that will have what you need. The Old City Market is full of craft shops and specialty shops that are located in the historic district. Along King Street you will find boutiques and antique shops and even some of the more well known shops like Gucci, Banana Republic, and Godiva.
